The Furry 5K raises money for the Help the Animals Fund (HTAF), which provides veterinary care and supplies for sick, injured or abused orphaned shelter animals.

The Seattle Animal Shelter takes in nearly 8,000 animals annually.
Of those, many receive the lifesaving care they need thanks to the generous donations of individuals and companies.

The HTAF is an integral part of saving lives – with annual veterinary expenses of approximately $100,000, every dollar raised counts!

I love telling the story of how I met Ellie because it was such an exciting time in my life.

I have been a dog-lover my entire life, and have never lived without a dog until I went off to college. Even then, I made frequent trips home to visit the family dogs. I was fortunate to move in with my sister and her dog during my Junior year, but knew that when I was close to graduating that I'd get a dog of my own.

Ellie quickly adjusted to her new home
The time finally came and I was ready to adopt a dog and I quickly learned that it was really difficult to find the type of dog I was looking for. After volunteering at a shelter for about 6 months and seeing dogs come and go (with whom I completely fell in love) I had no idea how hard it would be to find the dog that I would dedicate the next 10+ years of my life to.

I was on Petfinder.com daily, looking at dogs within a 50 mile radius.
My criteria:
  • Female
  • Young (around 3 years or younger) but not too young (preferably past the puppy stage)
  • Short hair
  • Medium build
One morning while I was interning, I was checking Petfinder which had become part of my morning routine, and I saw her. "Keiki" was what the shelter called her, and they included a YouTube video of someone petting her. In the video, she rolled over on the grass and let the person rub her belly. I was instantly in love!

Unfortunately, the shelter didn't open until 2pm so I had to wait a few hours before I could go there and snatch her up before anyone else could. I begged my boss to allow me to leave early that day and thankfully he allowed it.

When I got to the shelter, my heart was pounding. I was so nervous and excited to meet this dog, and hoped that no one else had adopted her already.

Well as you can see, the rest is history as she is here with me today, my little Ellie (I really couldn't put up with the name Keiki, and she had only been given the name a few days prior so I knew it would be fine to change it).

I delightedly shared my success story on Petfinder's forums a few weeks later along with a photo which has somehow made it onto their official Twitter background! How cool is that?!

Kashmere’s Story

In 2010, my boyfriend and I made the decision that our little family was just not complete, and we decided to start searching for a furry, four-legged addition.  On December 17, at the Seattle Animal Shelter, we were finally “chosen” by a tiny male kitten, and the little white bundle of fluff came equipped with a personality five times his size.  Proving his playfulness quickly, he kept us and 186 Trupanion Facebook friends guessing his name for an entire day.  In the end, he made it known that his name was Kashmere, unique, yet true to his softness!

Now, a year and a half later, Kashmere has grown into his big personality.  He is quite the fearless adventurer with a big appetite for all things edible.  He has no problem tapping into his canine side, wearing a harness and walking on a leash, and he especially likes to accompany me to work; although, not too often, as he doesn’t like to miss out on the empty-house adventures he’s having when we’re not there, most especially not having to share his favorite Wii remote.

Every day we spend with Kashmere, whether cuddling on the coach, relaxing on the porch, or traveling around town is a reminder of how lucky we are that such a sweet and loveable soul chose us as his family.  His big personality is a big part of our lives, and there is nothing that we wouldn’t do for him!

My wife and I had wanted to get a puppy for quite some time. It wasn’t just that we wanted a puppy to play with every day. We felt we were finally ready to grow our family. We had decided long ago that we weren’t going to have children – but we also knew that there was something missing in our home. But we had one major problem – my wife is totally allergic to dogs. She’s allergic to nearly all dogs. We had heard about and read about new “designer” dog breeds that claimed to be hypoallergenic. But she was skeptical. Each time we visited one of these dogs, her eyes would swell, her skin would turn red, and a marathon sneezing session would ensue.

Then we looked at Australian labradoodles. We went to a very well-regarded breeder, and spent some time around several full-grown ‘doodles, as well as two litters of ‘doodle puppies running around like crazy. Then we saw this mellow little brown puppy with a beautiful white crest on his chest. He came straight to me. I picked him up, and he abruptly fell right to sleep in the middle of my lap. That was it. I was in love. I felt like at that moment, he chose me to be his dad.

But what about my wife’s allergies? So far, nothing. No swollen eyes. No red skin. No sneezing. Could this really be? Did we finally find our little puppy companion?

My wife and I left the breeder’s house so smitten with the little brown puppy. He was so different than all the other labradoodles in the house. He was brown, not white. He was mellow, not hyperactive. And he looked right at me, while all the others were much more preoccupied with all their puppy shenanigans.

After an hour had gone by, she still showed no signs of allergies. It was amazing. We called the breeder and claimed our beautiful little guy. We named him Lazlo – after the character Victor Lazlo from the film Casablanca. We now had our family.

I was pretty sure he was a good little puppy. But I knew he was going to be a GREAT dog. And he reminds me that I was right every single day. He stayed mellow. He’s a good sharer of his toys, and he’s gentle to the core. He’s never over-chewed or swallowed a toy. And he only eats the food in his bowl. He even became a licensed therapy dog at just 16 months of age.

Five years later, my wife’s allergies are still unaffected, and the three of us are all healthy and happy.

We will do anything in the world to protect our little guy. Making sure he has access to the very best veterinary care possible makes me rest much easier. And that’s a very good thing – resting is Lazlo’s favorite family activity.

I adopted my Spaniel mix from Family Dogs New Life in Portland, Oregon. He had just been brought in from another shelter in Yakima and I was the first person to sign up to meet him. Several people signed up after me and when he was brought out to meet me, everyone started talking about him and was hoping I wouldn't take him home. My then-girlfriend (now wife) told me I should sleep on it - that I shouldn't make such a big decision right away. But I knew if I left him for even one night that he would be gone, so I immediately signed the paperwork. And he's an amazing dog - my wife says that's the only time she is happy I didn't listen to her!
